Your wellness is truly a sum of its parts

Right? If you’re doing this, in effect — whether it’s at the doctor or for your health in general — it’s not going to work. Not for long. Not to build a life lived fully well.

Think about it. So, you take your car and get magnificent new brakes put on it. The royalty of brakes. Your car used to stop like you had a Fred Flintstone vehicle and you were dragging your poor feet along the ground. Now? Man, that baby stops on a dime. But you totally ignore that the engine isn’t purring so well. Or that the tires are going flat. Or that your windshield is covered in grime, and you can’t even see where you’re going. Do the royal brakes matter as much now? No. It’s a system of parts. All the parts need to be in reasonable harmony, working as effectively as they can.

Yeah, you’re a car, kind of. (Except, well, you have things like feelings and experiences and people you love and hate and … sort of like you’re a Disney car.)

Go ahead and eat that perfectly healthy meal. Daily. That’s awesome. But, if you keep brushing under the rug that you are running on empty because your to do list is on overwhelm, your relationships are draining you and you have no freaking clue what the heck your life means anymore, guess what? Healthy meal isn’t enough to keep you well with all that.

It’s the whole shebang that matters. Not one isolated piece. It’s okay to work on a piece at a time. AS LONG AS you recognize it’s a piece, and don’t skip the other pieces. One perfect piece does not create a great whole.

Don’t translate this into overwhelm. It doesn’t mean you have to do more. It simply means you need to address wellness in a different way. Look at the whole picture, not a piece put under the magnifying glass. Sure, work on nutrition, if that’s what you believe you need, but don’t lose sight of the other 8 building blocks to wellness. What else might you need? What else is crying out for your attention? Pay attention so you can thrive. Keep your eye on some reasonable balance among all the systems that create wellness.

What are the 9 building blocks? Here’s a quick overview: 9 pathways that build wellness.
